For those who know; Danganronpa V3 has a concept in them that the fandom has dubbed "pre-game personalities". Basically in this idea, the world of V3 is obsessed with the show Danganronpa (which is a specialized death game, though many fics make it into a "no death IRL but still traumatized" kinda deal), with the contestants being individuals who audition for DR and if accepted, might have parts of them rewritten to make a more interesting character.

Now, if pre-game is real of not doesn't really matter to the actual theme of the game, but it is something that captured my imagination. Mainly cause all the characters in-game are shown in school uniforms, which could be another deflection of the part of Team Danganronpa, but it does end up implying that the contestants are allowed to be or are all teenagers. Which makes Danganronpa even more fucked & the same with their society.

Now the common fanon around the 4-ish characters that end up getting focus (Shuichi, Kokichi, Kaito & Kaede) are... fanon I'm not the most fond of TBH.

It's allowed to exist obviously. But to me, it discards that the pre-games seemed to be actually pretty similar to the in-games, just with a worldview contradicting the one we knew them to have & which made them want to join Danganronpa. I don't blame most people for not focusing on that idea (we only see audition tapes for Kaede, Kaito & Shuichi), but it does end up causing the pre-games to generally feel half-baked in fanfic.

My goal is to, at some point, create pre-games I'd be happy with. Pre-games who are still pretty similar to their in-games, just with a flipped worldview + a reason to join DR.

Now this requires a lot of character analysis, which I'm actually kinda bad at. But a step I think can help me is to just watch a couple let's plays of V3, but focusing more on specific characters. This would let me soak in more information, which would at least improve this skill. Kinda hampered by the fact I'm not actually finished with THH, UDG or 3 the anime (+ the fact I should re-consume Goodbye Despair), but nobody is rushing me.

So since I finished V3 (even during it TBH), I had mixed feelings on Kaito. I knew I liked the fanfic version of him better, but first I thought that it was simply the case of me reading fanfic before finishing the game, but now I think different.

Basically; somebody in a server we were in said that Kaito was like if somebody tried to deconstruct the hero-archetype & failed, and, yeah, that's basically the energy he has.

The fact his positivity is like Kaede's toxic one at the start, but without ever admitting that it's toxic to the end. It also isn't helped he seemingly has conservative-leaning views (saying Gonta shouldn't apologize so much cause its not manly, calling Ryoma a coward for being suicidal, saying its weird for a girl to know much about weaponry at the Ult/SHSL assassin), apparently in the Japanese version he also expresses queerphobic views.

Some apparently make him the worst about them in fics & stuff, but I actually like that Kaito is oddly subtle with them. To me who has parents who lean conservative, it feels true that their views wouldn't really come up in most situations + might even make an exception for you.

Kaito just ends up feeling, really off to me. I still like him though! Mostly to bully him now, but I still like to think of him in situations and stuff. I'd hate to meet him IRL, but he's a fun character to me.

Something we've been thinking about is; how do people choose the gender of the Pokémon Protagonist for their AUs & fanfiction?

I've seen 2 AUs that make all the protags male to match the fact that Red's the only canon protagonist we see after their journey (within B2W2, the gender of the protag being determined by if you played the previous game & connected it's save to the sequel). Both these AUs gave the female versions roles if they canonically didn't have them, but it's something that made us think when we saw somebody go for an all-girls AU.

But in regards to what I've seen on AO3; Red is always the protagonist for Kanto (logical seeing as it IS Canon). Johto is a mixed bag on what protag you get & the most recent games all being the female versions more often than not. My assumption is that the girl-tags just, have nicer designs generally compared to the guy-tags, who usually have plainer ones. The only exception is ScarVio, which is a pretty mixed bag (& even then it's pretty often that the writers just make both protagonists canon). The only other guy-tag besides Red I've seen consistently getting favored over the girl-tag is Hilbert, which I'm pretty sure is cause he's a male protagonist with an above-decent design & it makes the thing with N gay.

I'm curious what other people think of when choosing the gender of the Poké-Protag(s) in their fics / AUs. We've not decided yet how we'll determine it, so we'd like other people's thoughts to see if it'll sway ours.
