Legend of Mana

Gilbert's new song: Oh, baby I'm gettin' hard! So hard for you, baby!
gilbert: love is blind (legend of mana)

Finished the Legend of Mana remaster last weekend! It was unexpectedly gay. The straight love triangle was bland, the straight + serial-monogamist centaur ended up single (I really liked how it was friends-to-lovers-to-friends from the siren's PoV), the clinically (and relatably) depressed boy and his tirelessly optimistic partner were extremely moving... and finally... the lesbians. The lesbians were a knight/priestess you-and-me-against-our-entire-clan storyline with a touch of yandere-ness and genderfluidity. They were the game's most important arc too and they have you going through so much Plot and tragedy before revealing that actually this is a love story.

Anyway, more thoughts here and more photos of my physical journal pages here.

The Legend of Tian-ding

In today's episode of impulse buying (the perils of browsing the discounted section of the Nintendo eshop...), I've picked up The Legend of Tianding, a 2D platformer set in Dadaocheng, Taipei under the Japanese occupation. You play the (real-life) Taiwanese folk hero Liao Tian-ding, a hot-blooded young rebel who steals from the rich, shares with the poor, and, well, gives Japanese soldiers who get in his way a thorough thrashing. Incidentally I'm also playing the murder mystery game Murders on the Yangtze River, which occurs in roughly the same time period (early 1900s), so I feel like I'm getting a more comprehensive historical education. XD

The spoken language of Legend of Tianding is Taiwanese Hokkien. I can only understand around 10 words, but it's nice to hear in a videogame. I'm playing on story mode (which the game calls "Gentleman Thief" mode) but it's still a struggle for me. 😂 The design and interface are very nice to look at and the cutscenes have a dynamic comicbook-like style. I've uploaded some screencaps and GIFs here.

More Goes Wrong Show questions from Tumblr! I'm always delighted to receive these.

Anonymous: How would the girls feel about playing boys?

Annie throws herself with enthusiasm into male roles and has a great time. Even in the Cornley Drama Festival, when she had control over the staging and casting, she actively chose to play a man in her farce; it’s definitely something she’s happy to do!

Vanessa is more or less neutral on playing male roles; a role is a role like any other. However, male roles do add an extra source of stress; she worries about whether she’s believably depicting a man, and she’ll panic if she messes up in some way, e.g. if her voice slips.

Sandra dislikes playing male roles. She’s here to be a sexy lady, and she feels that being cross-cast gets in the way of that. Which is a shame, because she looked great as a boy in 'The Most Lamentable...'!

Lucy is stressed out in any role, but she slightly prefers playing boys because it means she doesn’t have to hear Robert’s bizarre ideas about How to Be Feminine.

[tumblr.com profile] mosswall: What does the venn diagram look like between Robert Goes Wrong Show and Jeremy Clarkson?

Extremely heavy but not quite complete overlap!

- Robert only: fictional, obsessed with acting.
- Clarkson only: non-fictional, obsessed with cars.
- Both: large, loud, aggressive, ridiculous, attention-grabbing, destructive, distinctive style of speaking, oblivious to others, highly entertaining, cause a lot of problems, part of a close-knit but frequently antagonistic group of friends who manage to make everything into a disaster, outrageously fun to write, people give me weird looks when they learn that I think they’re hot.

Anonymous: I don’t know a lot about “the show that goes wrong” but do you think they would perform death note the musical and if they did perform death note the musical who would get which role.

I’m going to say that Max would play Ryuk - he’s got the grin for it - and Chris would give himself the role of Light. Annie would be fun as Misa! I can see Sandra as Rem.

Robert demands to be L. Chris refuses to cast him as L; he instead casts Robert as Light’s father and gives the role of L to Jonathan. Inevitably, though, Jonathan is unable to get onto the stage during the performance, and Robert gleefully steps in. Chris and Robert definitely capture the intense hostile homoeroticism of Light and L’s duets, although some parts of the audience are confused by L apparently being Light’s father.

Anonymous: I was going to ask "shag marry kill" for the Goes Wrong crew, but there are too many of them! How many of them are there, nine? Okay. Shag, marry, kill, roommate, stuck in elevator with, fake married to, coworker, owe £10000 to, unexpectedly related to. I think that's nine.

Shag: Robert. It's unlikely to be a good idea, but, look, if I've got to shag one of them, I'm going to shag the hottest man I've ever seen.

Marry: Vanessa. I don't want to be married to anyone, and I think Vanessa's likely to accept 'actually, this was a mistake, wasn't it? let's get divorced' without complaint. Even if we end up permanently married, Vanessa is one of the more liveable-with members of the society, despite being a little high-strung.

Kill: Jonathan. He won't be able to get through the pearly gates, and they'll have to send him back to Earth.

Roommate: Annie. She's very warm and friendly and enthusiastic; I think we'd get along!

Owe £10,000 to: Dennis. He will forget, meaning I can pay him back in small instalments over a long period without Dennis ever hounding me or getting upset; he will, in fact, be surprised and delighted every time I give him money.

Unexpectedly related to: Maybe Max? He seems to have a wealthy and supportive family, after all! Maybe they can help out with the £10,000 I owe to Dennis.

At this point I realise, to my mild horror, that I have to choose between Chris and Trevor for 'stuck in elevator with' and 'fake married to'.

Stuck in elevator with: Chris. He will be stressed out, but he is a better option than Trevor, who will attempt to force the lift's doors open, causing it to plummet to the bottom of the shaft and killing us both.

Therefore, by process of elimination, I will end up fake married to Trevor. I'm not sure my family will be thrilled by my apparent marriage to a man who lives in a layby in two thirds of a caravan, but it beats dying in a falling lift.

WAIT, HOLD ON, I FORGOT SANDRA AND COWORKER WERE OPTIONS

In that case, I'll get stuck in the lift with Sandra and have Chris as a coworker. Chris is testy and I'm sure we'll rub each other the wrong way sometimes, but I'm also sure he will get his work done and respond to emails. Sandra will complain loudly the whole time we're stuck in the lift, but I can handle that. Again, the crucial thing, for my own safety, is that I do not end up stuck in a lift with Trevor.

I was also asked for my five favourite costumes Robert wears in The Goes Wrong Show; I'm going to link to my response on my Goes Wrong website because it includes a handful of screenshots.

Knowledge from Indigenous peoples is essential for designing more effective nature conservation strategies

For instance, the Huancavilca community of the Ecuadorian coast, a pre-Columbian culture, have long tended the ivory palm – a species now under pressure from deforestation.

The Haida people of Canada have traditional practices around abalone, a species today threatened by overfishing, poaching, and climate change.

In Nepal, the Chepang culture maintains a relationship with the butter tree that has sustained both the community and the species through generations of market fluctuation and ecological change.

In each case, the species and the community are intertwined. You can’t protect one without attending to the other.

I've been watching 真の仲間じゃないと勇者のパーティーを追い出されたので、辺境でスローライフすることにしました (shin no nakama ja nai to yūsha no pātī o oidasareta no de, henkyō de surō raifu suru koto ni shimashita, "Because I was banished from the hero's party for not being a true comrade, I've decided to live the slow life in the countryside", Eng: "Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside") because it's not an isekai but the background is very similar, because they're both drawing from the same well.

In Banished, everyone in the world is born with a 加護 (kago), which Weblio defines as:
神仏が力で衆生を守り助けること, "The protection extended by the gods and the Buddha to all living things"
but the English subtitles translate as "Blessing." Now when I first heard that, I thought back to that passage in Tanakh:
"See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; and I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise skilful works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all manner of workmanship. And I, behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee."
-Exodus 31:2-7
But it's not, it's literally RPG classes. You are Assigned Fighter At Birth and it makes you want to go punch things. Seriously, it's a plot point that if your 加護 relates to fighting and martial prowess your personality changes so you become more likely to reach for fighting as the first tool to solve problems.

Now, there are some cool worldbuilding side effects that result from this. We're told that 加護 are assigned completely randomly with no regard for the parents' 加護 or the child's station in life, so the son of a farmhand can get the 加護 of the shōgun and the daughter of a woodcutter can get the 加護 of the archmage, but by the same token, a princess can get the 加護 of the thief. It makes me wonder how hereditary nobility even developed in this world--surely they'd have some kind of caste system that your 加護 sorted you into, right?

Well, maybe that comes into play late in the story, because I'm not that far in, but at the point I'm at we've learned that the reason the main character left the hero's party is because his 加護 is the 導き手 (michibikite, "Guide"), and you might think, "Oh, so he's good at tracking or wilderness survival or-" but you're wrong. The effects of that 加護 are basically "You gain +30 levels when it manifests but you can't gain any extra XP", so his 加護 is literally that he's the overpowered tutorial character you get in the early parts of the RPG but who eventually leaves your party, either because the story makes them or because their stat growth is low enough that relying on them too much will eventually handicap you.

And that's why I'm writing this post, because even in a pure fantasy series it's just based on video game tropes. Anime like KonoSuba literally have people carry their character sheets in their pockets and Banished isn't that bad, but it still has a character that people in the discussion I read kept referring to with a Fire Emblem term because it's such a well-known character type over there. And I think the reason for all of this is that people don't read the original sources. The author of Banished did not grow up reading classic fantasy, they grew up playing video games and reading books inspired by video games (specifically Dragon Quest and games based on it), the same way that modern D&D designers did not grow up reading Fritz Leiber and C.L. Moore and Robert E. Howard, they grew up playing D&D and reading D&D books and modern D&D reflects that--it's based on D&D, not on pulp adventurers. The biggest problem I have with isekai series--and maybe with Banished, we'll see--is that they'll often set up a really cool background and premise and then go absolutely nothing with it in favor of relying on standard video game tropes. Even Frieren, as good as it is with its exploration of mortality, is still like, "Oh, we need a priest so we have a healer" at one point.

And it's easy to look at the development of fantasy in Japan and say, well, that's just how it is, since they got their idea of elf-dwarf-orc fantasy not from The Lord of the Rings, but from Dragon Quest, which got it from Wizardry. But there are plenty of old Japanese fantasy series like Escaflowne or Magic Knights Rayearth that don't rely on video game logic. Hell, Record of Lodoss War is literally based on a Sword World tabletop campaign and it still doesn't have characters talking about their classes and levels! This is a modern development and while I occasionally look at one of these series and think about playing a game in that setting--I'll admit, Banished reminds me a lot of how Earthdawn took a lot of D&D tropes like classes and monster-filled dungeons and levels and worked an explanation of them into the world--but I'm getting a little tired of this popping up everywhere. We'll see if Banished does anything interesting with it as the series goes on.

If anyone has any recommendations for recent Japanese fantasy that's not based on That Summer the Writer Spent Playing Dragon Quest III (or worse, reading books by people who spent a summer playing Dragon Quest III) let me know.

Summary: When he came to, the bus was on the freeway. The windows were dewed with drops of melted snow that shone with captured light. Outside, traffic was at a standstill. Dingy slush covered the roads, gradually accumulating as snow drifted down from the woolen sky, the flakes picked out in sharp contrast where they plunged into the light of streetlamps and headlights. Wei WuXian laughed softly to see it. When he turned away from the window, he saw that the beautiful man from earlier was still sitting next to him, watching him with an expression that might, optimistically, be called inquisitive.

“The snow,” Wei WuXian said, gesturing outside. “It looks like champagne bubbles, only going the wrong way.” He laughed again, and rubbed his head. “Have you ever felt drunk, but been pretty sure you weren't drinking? Haha, no, never mind me. I'm just tired.” He rubbed a hand over his face, wanting desperately to sleep.

Reccer's Notes: A modern AU account of a snowy night when Lan Wangji serves as Public Transit Guardian Angel to an exhausted, dissociating, and hypothermic Wei Wuxian—who has been in far more trouble than he realizes.

Until the summer of 2023, shanks’ mare and Dayton, Ohio’s city bus system were my primary modes of transportation. This hazy grey winter ghost-story-or-is-it? is anchored in Suspicious_Popsicle’s concrete lived-in detail, nailing the experience of looping interminably around just to shelter from the elements, waiting for the next opportunity for a stop or transfer (better hope you have at least a day pass and a sympathetic driver, and that you don’t drowse off again!) And of trudging wearily forward through the hostile frigid weather in sodden Vimes’ Boots! Boots! Boots!

Suffice to say that the idea of rescue by a steadfast, devoted, and ethereally handsome Saint Bernard held a profound appeal.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/20/26 -- We went out to run errands and do some plant shopping.  I found some things on my list but not everything.  Stuff is just so much less consistent and reliable nowadays.  :/

EDIT 5/20/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/20/26 -- I planted the 'Sunsugar' cherry tomato in a pot at the new picnic table.

EDIT 5/20/26 -- I planted most of the marigolds in pots on the old and new picnic tables and the septic garden.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.
