AO3 echo

There wasn’t anything left for Saihara, not in this life anyway.

He finished tidying up his bedroom, even if it wasn’t tidy at all. Walls covered in posters of DanganRonpa, the plates and cups he collected over the last few weeks back in the kitchen, clothing he would never use again in the washing machine. The only things he would take with him from home would be the clothing on his back and the relief that was drilling holes in his bones.

Mom and Dad had never before seemed so excited for him, but it could never match the unwavering joy in his veins threatening every second to overflow from him.

He was going to be on DanganRonpa.

Saihara, for the last time he ever will, looked back to the place he hid his diaries. Ever since he was a little kid his parents had encouraged him to write in them, seemingly hoping he’d be better at being a person if he were to read back on what he did over the years.

All those books filled told him was that he never really changed.

Crossed out attempts at poems, stories of a youth finding family that loved without condition, words made eligible by tear-stains.

Even so young, he understood that there was little hope in people shaped holes like him. But now he never has to be stuck with the knowledge ever again. Never again stuck with expectations of people he could never please no matter what. All those years of being trapped in either his room or by the world; all of it washed away once he is no longer himself.

Saihara heard of things, in real life, on the internet, from people both for and against Team DanganRonpa. Of how the company was actively looking for the desperate and vulnerable, how they had a bias for people who would not be missed by their families, graphs showing that most contestants were barely middle-class.

Good for them, honestly.

Good for him.

Saihara was a loner, a weirdo that often just ended up acting in the uncanny valley, a creep nobody would genuinely mourn. His parents would simply mourn the child they wanted to have and not him. And he has long since accepted this fact of his reality, but now he had a chance of acceptable escape.

He has long since stopped caring about himself, if being ripped apart graphically for millions to witness meant even just one pair of eyes mourns for him, looked at what he helped create and cares, he’ll have won.

Maybe the person who will replace him will hate him for what Saihara is going to do to him, by proxy at least, and he wouldn’t blame the other. But Saihara can’t help but hope for it, for it will mean that his body’s new self is a better human then he could ever be. Something beautiful will come out of this rot people call a human.

Saihara finally leaves, never to return.
