Mari was halfway sure this was going to end in tragedy.
She wasn’t sure when she broke off her defenses. She knew the day of their first kiss, of how they’d been cuddling in bed after Sunny’s blisters broke open. Of how they’d been, for a while at that point, talking about how much they loved each other (how it became more and more clear that neither of them were talking about simply being familial). Mari wasn’t sure what made her close to the gap to kiss Sunny. And she is sure she would’ve cried harder if it weren’t for the utter joy and care in his hands on her face.
In public; they didn’t change much, they had always been quite affectionate for siblings. But in private they shared quiet moments of romantic sparks and domesticity. It almost became a game in its own right, with how much affection they could get away with. They did dates when they could hide it or pretend it was a simple sibling handout. She watched him grow to be taller than her (not by much, but it didn’t stop her from finding it handsome). And every year the same thoughts would come back to Mari.
‘Would this be it?’
Sunny had claimed on that night that he would always love her that way, but for how long would that be true? How long would Sunny still want to be with somebody he could never marry or even do PDA in public with? How long till Sunny would feel damaged by what Mari has done to him?
But, every year, the thoughts get quieter.
Because for three years now, Sunny has stayed by her side.
Mari has made sure since the start, that if Sunny ever wanted to leave he could. That if he ever didn’t feel safe anymore he should report her. But he never did. It wasn’t that Sunny never minded the secrecy, that he could never marry her if he wanted to keep his other ties. But every time they talked about it, he said it was worth it. All these complications were and are worth it, as long as they were together.
And every time Mari wants to kiss him silly.
Mari is going to college soon, meaning she is going to move. Sunny was still going to high school in their home meaning they’d weren’t going to have much time with each other for a while. They had been planning on when to call each other, on making secret LiveJournal accounts to keep up with each other, to exchange letters to have something physical of each other until they could meet again.
Mari was halfway sure this was going to end in tragedy. Maybe by Sunny wanting to break up or others finding out. But for now Mari couldn’t be happier to have Sunny as her most beloved.
